National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) – PHYSICS
GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF STUDENTS
for the Year 2023, 20th Batch

HBCSE usually receives a large number of excellent applications from the FIRST-YEAR undergraduate students from all over the country. However, due to the limitations on accommodation, arrangements for lecture hall and laboratories at HBCSE, we will have to limit the total intake for the 20th batch to about 65 students.

A selection committee will be appointed by the National Coordinator, NIUS. All the completed and eligible applications will be categorized in the following FOUR groups,

Students who are enrolled for

  1. 3-year BSc / BSc(H) with Physics as one of the subjects,
  2. 4-year BS / BSc / BSc(H) / BTech / BE in Physics / Applied Physics / Engineering Physics,
  3. 5-year BS-MS / Integrated MSc with a strong interest in Physics and
  4. 4 and 5-year BE / BTech / BTech-MTech Dual Degree in any branch of Engineering / Technology with a strong interest in Physics.

Each application will be evaluated, independently by at least two members of the selection committee and the first short list of students will be prepared. Subsequently all short-listed applications will be discussed and finalized by the committee.

Evaluation of each application will be based on the following:

a) Performance in STD X, STD XII and First Semester of UG degree examinations,

b) Confidential Assessment from two teachers/referees,

c) A 100 word write up to explain student’s interest in NIUS and

d) Additional qualifications, contributions and awards (like KVPY, INSPIRE, OCSC and International Olympiads, etc.)

Based on the above,

  1. Approximately 45% of the participants will be selected from the 3-year BSc/BSc(H) group.
  2. Approximately 50% of the participants will be selected from the combined group of 4-year BS/BSc/BSc(H)/BE/BTech in Physics/Applied Physics/Engineering Physics group and 5-year MS/MSc (Integrated).
  3. Approximately 5% of the participants will be selected from the 4 and 5-year BTech/BE BTech/BTech-MTech Dual Degree (Engineering/Technology) group.

In addition, about 5 toppers from the Indian Association of Physics Teacher’s National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) 2023, who are in FIRST YEAR of their 3-year BSc/BSc(H) course will also be invited for the NIUS (Physics).

The list of selected students will be made available on the NIUS website by May 20, 2023 and an email invitation will be sent to each selected student by May 25, 2023.
