National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) – PHYSICS

Announcement for the Year 2023, 20th Batch

NIUS in PHYSICS is designed to provide extended mentoring and guidance to undergraduate students in various areas in Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics and Physics Education Research. Under the NIUS in Physics, about 70 selected students attend the first NIUS camp (20.1) organized at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) TIFR, Mumbai, and subsequently work on NIUS projects during their vacations over a period of about one and half years (July 2023 – December 2024). Further information on the NIUS is available on the NIUS website at https://nius.hbcse.tifr.res.in/

For the 20th batch. the first in-person exposure and enrichment camp (20.1) will be held at HBCSE Mumbai from July 5, 2023 to July 17, 2023. Every selected student is required to attend the camp in-person for its entire duration. This camp will be an introductory camp where leading scientists and teachers will offer short courses on various topics in physics. There will also be a 25-hour laboratory course based on the “Experimental Problem Solving” approach. In addition, there will be project related and enrichment lectures.

This camp will be followed by an extended nurture programme for a smaller subset of selected students in the form of NIUS (Physics) projects in different research institutions across the country. These students will be required to visit their respective mentors’ institutions to work on the projects. A final report at the end of two years will mark the successful completion of the NIUS (Physics) project.

Applications are invited for NIUS (PHYSICS) for the 20th batch (Year: 2023) from ONLY the FIRST-YEAR undergraduate students with a strong interest in scientific research and development, who are enrolled in India for any of the following degrees,

  1. 3-year BSc / BSc(H) with Physics as one of the subjects,
  2. 4-year BS / BSc / BSc(H) / BTech / BE in Physics / Applied Physics / Engineering Physics,
  3. 5-year BS-MS / Integrated MSc with a strong interest in Physics and
  4. 4 and 5-year BE / BTech / BTech-MTech Dual Degree in any branch of Engineering / Technology with a strong interest in Physics.

Applicants should have a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades in Class X and Class XII examinations.

Last date for completion of the ONLINE application and ONLINE submission of two confidential Assessment forms by the teachers/referees is APRIL 23, 2023.

Please note that the NIUS (Astronomy) programme for the year 2023 is announced separately at https://nius.hbcse.tifr.res.in/announcements/national-initiative-on-undergraduate-science-nius-astronomy/

The application process for NIUS (Physics) and NIUS (Astronomy) programmes is common. Students interested in both programmes will be able to apply for both together in the same form, and will be required to indicate their preference of subject. Students should not submit separate applications for two subjects. A student will be selected in only ONE of the subjects, if at all. Only one ONLINE confidential assessment will be requested from each of the two referees, and the student’s preference of subject (and other details in the application) will be revealed to the referees.

Please note that HBCSE will send the link to your teachers/referees by email. Please make sure that you enter their correct email Ids and also make sure that both your teachers / Referees do submit the ONLINE confidential assessment form before APRIL 20, 2023. Else your application will be treated incomplete and you will not be eligible for the NIUS (Physics).

[Please note that HBCSE is aware of the examination and vacation schedules of various universities and institutions across the country. Unfortunately, since the academic calendars of different institutions are quite asynchronous, it is impossible to find a long enough window to fit the NIUS camp during vacation time of every university. Best efforts have been made already to ensure that students from a maximum number of institutions can avail of this opportunity. Please do not approach HBCSE with requests to reschedule the camp due to clashes with your academic calendar.]

The list of selected students will be made available on the NIUS website by May 20, 2023 and an email invitation will be sent to each selected student by May 25, 2023.

The guidelines for selection of students for the NIUS in (Physics) for the 20th batch which will be followed by the selection committee is available HERE.
