(NIUS) ASTRONOMY-GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF STUDENTS

(NIUS) ASTRONOMY-GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF STUDENTS

Year: 2022

HBCSE usually receives a large number of excellent applications from the FIRST-YEAR undergraduate students from all over the country for the NIUS programme. We expect to select about 30 students for the NIUS (Astronomy) programme in 2022.

A selection committee for NIUS (Astronomy) 2022, will be appointed by the National Coordinator, NIUS. All the completed and eligible applications will be categorized in the following FOUR groups,

Students who are enrolled for
3-year B.Sc. / B.Sc.(H) with Physics as one of the subjects,
4-year B.S. / B. Tech. / B.E. in Physics / Applied Physics / Engineering Physics,
5-year BS-MS / Integrated M. Sc. with a strong interest in Physics and
4 / 5-year B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Tech-M.Tech Dual Degree in any branch of Engineering / Technology with a strong interest in Physics.

Each application will be evaluated in depth, independently by at least two members of the selection committee and the first short list of students will be prepared. Subsequently all short-listed applications will be discussed and finalized by the committee.

Evaluation of each application will be based on the following:
a) Performance in STD X, STD XII and First Semester of UG degree examinations,
b) Confidential Assessment from two teachers/referees,
c) Brief answers to certain questions regarding the student’s interest and exposure in Astronomy,
d) Additional qualifications, contributions and awards (like KVPY, INSPIRE, OCSC and International Olympiads, etc.)

Based on the above,
Approximately 45% of the participants will be selected from the 3-year B.Sc./B.Sc.(H) group.
Approximately 50% of the participants will be selected from the 4-year B.S./B.E./B.Tech. in Physics/Applied Physics/Engineering Physics group and 5-year M.S. / M.Sc. (Integrated) group.
Approximately 5% of the participants will be selected from the 4 or 5-year B.Tech./B.E. (Engineering/ Technology) group.

The list of selected students will be made available on the NIUS website by May 15, 2022 and an email invitation will be sent to each selected student by May 20, 2022.
