Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. The broad goals of

the Centre are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college

level. The National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) is a major programme of HBCSE aimed at enhancing the quality of undergraduate science education in India.

We announce the 1st NIUS Workshop on Introductory Computational Science for teachers and students at the undergraduate level. The workshop will

introduce basic concepts of numerical techniques and their implementation in the context of physics problems. The workshop will consist of lectures on various tools of computational science  and extended sessions of hands-on programming and problem-solving on computers. Topics to be covered include:

- Interpolation, extrapolation and linear regression

- Roots of polynomial equations

- Numerical methods of differential and integral calculus

- Elementary matrix operations

The workshop will include training in Fortran programming to enable participants to implement the techniques themselves. No prior expertise

in programming is necessary, although basic familiarity with computers and programming would be useful. This is a workshop at the introductory level, so experts in numerical methods and/or programming need not apply.

Lecturers at the camp include H. M. Antia (TIFR), Vijay Singh (HBCSE), Anwesh Mazumdar (HBCSE) and Praveen Pathak (HBCSE).

We are happy to invite COLLEGE TEACHERS who teach PHYSICS at the UNDERGRADUATE level to participate in the camp. In addition, a small number of SECOND YEAR PHYSICS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS will also be accommodated.

Please send the completed relevant application form (which can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this page) to reach HBCSE on or before August 12, 2013.

List of selected participants will be available on this website by 15 August, 2013. Letters of invitation will follow.

All the participants will be eligible for to and fro travel fare as per government norms (maximum only up to II AC by train). All the participants will receive a registration kit and free tea/snacks/lunch during all the four days of the workshop. Accommodation will be provided to the participants in HBCSE guest house.
